OVERVIEW

Volunteering at the Festival for the Eno has become a 4th of July weekend tradition for many people in this area, and as environmentally-aware new people move to the Triangle , we constantly want to inform them about the Festival for the Eno as the fun-filled, learning experience that it is! It is a great introduction to North Carolina! Everything from the music, crafts, food, demonstrations and exhibits, non-profit booths, and dance maintains the traditional flavor of our beautiful state and shows a special appreciation of the river that we have worked relentlessly to protect. Our hardworking volunteers get to enjoy all this and more at the Festival free of charge on the days that they volunteer.

Volunteers are a vital part of this effort. As our population expands, so does our need for volunteers. So we would encourage our new residents to consider helping to preserve our precious parklands by volunteering a few hours of your time to make the 26th annual Festival for the Eno an even more exciting and colorful event!

VOLUNTEER POSITIONS AVAILABLE
Before Festival
  • Workdays: Signs need to be painted and recycling centers set up. The Big Top Tent will be raised on Saturday, June 28th. Tasks are not so strenuous but require lots of gloved hands! Refreshments are provided and the activities going on in the park on a busy Saturday provide an interesting backdrop for our labors.
  • Postering: Distribution of publicity posters and Festival brochures, available the first of June. Libraries, recreation departments, government offices, any community bulletin boards, as well as businesses and workplaces offer great opportunity to inform people about the coming Festival.
  • Food donations: For Saturday workdays throughout June. Picnic items.
  • Office: Answering telephones, copying, mailings, data entry. Weekdays during June. Times are flexible.
  • Transportation: Errands, pick ups and deliverys.  Pick up trucks especially useful in Durham.

During Festival

  • Recycling:  Shifts are 3 hours or less. Checking recycling stations, sorting and separating trash. For the past three years we have recycled or composted 90% of our trash at the Festival. This is largely due to our dedicated staff of recyclers. Good humor and a willingness to get messy are a must. Click here for more details on our "Trash Free" Festival or call Judy at (919) 383-7172.
  • Composting: Shifts are 3 hours or less. Build the compost pile during the Festival. Stay in the shade and help the microbes with their task. Click here for more info on our award winning "Trash-Free" Festival or call Judy at (919) 383-7172.
  • Drink Booths: Shifts are 3 hours or less. Sell bottled water, fountain and fruit drinks to thirsty Festival goers! Covered booths are staffed by 2 or 3 volunteers at all times. Recycling guidelines are posted in booths. Provide friendly information to crowd, great way to meet people. Several booths are near stages and all are fun!
  • Ticket Booths: Shifts are 3 1/2 hours. Coordinated by manager. Off site and on site booths are set up under tents. Give an enthusiastic greeting and great first impression to Festival goers as you sell tickets and hand out programs.
  • Facepainting: Shifts are 3 hours. Coordinated by manager. Decorate the children and adults! An opportunity to use your art/graphic skills and have fun painting designs on happy faces.
  • Hands on Clay: Shifts are 2 1/2 hours. Coordinated by manager. 800 pounds of clay is generously donated each year to let children explore the pottery techniques of wedging and handbuilding. This basically requires the desire to work with children, provide them with materials, encouragement and help tidy up after them! Pottery wheels are also demonstrated and there is a need for volunteers with this pottery skill.
  • Music Tapers: Shifts average 3 hours. Coordinated by manager. Operate the tape recording equipment at one of the three major sound stages or the spoken-word stage. These tapes are for the Festival archives.
  • Raffle/Calendar Booths: Shifts are 4 hours or less. Coordinated by manager. Help with display and removal of raffle prizes or display and removal of calendar table items. Sell raffle tickets and award raffle prizes to happy winners! Sell calendars and items at the calendar table. Raffle tent is in the active Meadow area. Lots of fun and excitement all around!
  • Collection Pick Up: Shifts are 3 hours or less. Walking and driving routes through the site collect recyclables. Click here for more details on our "Trash Free" Festival or call Judy at (919) 383-7172.
