Conservation of the River

The Association acts as a land trust to accept and hold land and easements for conservation purposes.  We are working actively in both Orange and Durham counties on a variety of conservation projects.

We continue to work diligently to help complete the Eno River State Park Master Plan.  With over 4,000 acres (map) protected in the State Park thus far, the Association has accomplished much.  But there are more than 1,000 acres still in need of protection.  We are constantly working with various landowners within the Master Plan area to seek ways to incorporate their lands into the park, for the good of both the public and the wildlife of the area.

We have helped to establish other public park lands including West Point on the Eno and Penny's Bend Nature Preserve in Durham, the Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area near Hillsborough, and the Little River Regional Park in Northern Durham County.  We work to partner with local governments and other conservation organizations where possible, in order to achieve the greatest conservation benefit for our community and our watershed.

Most recently, we have partnered with Orange County and its Lands Legacy Program to conserve lands along the upper Eno (map), north of Hillsborough.  This Upper Eno Project is an incredibly exciting project that will result in the conservation of hundreds of acres within the Eno River watershed.

The efforts to protect the Eno over the past three decades and counting has resulted in an extraordinarily clean river, full of life and recreational opportunities.  The Eno provides drinking water to Raleigh, Durham, Hillsborough and many other communities of the Triangle Region.  It is one of the main source streams for the Falls Lake reservoir.  So, its protection is not only important to wildlife habitat, it is also tremendously important to water quality.
