The Eno River Association has been working on Eno Drive issues for over 30 years. We have opposed the original alignment, helped craft a community-oriented alternative (Northern Durham Parkway), rallied citizens and worked to educate our elected officials on the impacts of the proposed road. We worked collaboratively with the Chamber of Commerce, Board of County Commissioners and City Council to develop the proposal known as the Northern Durham Parkway. After it was rejected by the Department of Transportation we fought efforts to get the original alignment approved by the Transportation Advisory Committee and served on an ad-hoc committee (again with the Chamber, County and City) working on alternatives. We have worked closely with the No Build Coalition and the East End Connector Coalition and we have helped forge a community agreement for a revised Northern Durham Parkway that we believe will result in reasonable roads for northern and eastern Durham County, while protecting as much of the Eno River basin as possible. Information on the issues, meetings and outcomes follow below. Long Range Transportation Plan APPROVED! Priorities Set: East End Connector, US 70 and I 85 Come First The Transportation Advisory Committee met December 18, 2002 and approved the Long Range Transportation Plan. Included in that plan is a list of Highway Trust Fund projects. Eno Drive was stopped at Roxboro Road, and stopped north of the Eno, where it does not line up with the original western portion of the road.
In addition, the Highway Trust Fund projects were prioritized and the portions of Eno Drive that will be built are prioritized 4th, 5th and 6th.Before those roads are funded, the East End Connector and improvements to US 70 and and I 85 are to be funded first.
This is a major victory in the fight against Eno Drive! The State Park and West Point on the Eno are both being protected.
