Penny’s
Bend Nature Preserve
Mother’s Day Hike 9:30
am - Join Ed Harrison, Penny’s
Bend Management Advisory Committee, and bring along your mother for
a turn through the spring landscape of this 84-acre nature preserve
in northwest Durham, surrounded on three sides by the Eno River. With
luck, the wild blue indigo will be in full bloom. The Penny’s
Bend Preserve, managed by the North Carolina Botanical Garden, encompasses
mature forests and remnant prairies where numerous regionally rare
plants live. Fee: $8 (NCBG members $6). Directions provided upon registration:
call the NC Botanical Garden to register 962-0522.
Ed is a one-time Eno River State Park naturalist
who is especially interested in educating Association members about “the Bend,” probably
the most intensely-managed natural area in the watershed. After the
Botanical Gardens stops taking registration – about 4:30 PM on
Friday, May 9 – you can call him at 490-1566 until 9 PM to see
if spots are still available for the hike.

Mother's Day Weekend Mountain Laurel Hike 2:00
pm - Hike with a ranger and celebrate Mother's Day by showing Mom the
mountain laurel blooms at their peak. The hike will be less than one

Occoneechee Mountain (Difficulty level: Moderate,
good trails but very hilly terrain)
2:00 pm - Take exit #164 from I-85. Turn north toward Hillsborough
on Churton Street. Turn left on Mayo Street; go past a small shopping
center. Turn left on Orange Grove Road. After less than one mile, turn
right on Virginia Cates Drive (gravel) just before Orange Grove passes
under the interstate. The parking lot is on the left after the ponds.

month Trekkers will discover the fantastic flowers in the butterfly
garden. We will read Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert and get our
hands dirty planting a rainbow of our own. Cost: $2.00 per participant

Tiny Trekkers is a monthly program for young children ages 2 to 4
years old accompanied by an adult. Trekkers learn about the world of
nature through stories, activities, crafts and games. Pre-registration
