iWALK THE ENO CANCELLED FOR 2020 but here is another opportunity:
We are missing iWalk but do have something your camper this June. The Eno River Association will be offering a series of guided nature hikes with the chance to learn about ecoEXPLORE!
ecoEXPLORE is an incentive-based citizen science initiative of the North Carolina Arboretum. It was created for kids in ages 5-13 to encourage outdoor learning and recreation. Participants will take a guided nature hike along the Eno River with Eno educators and learn about the plants and animals that call the Eno River home! During our hike participants will also take photos of what they discover. These photos will then be uploaded to your child’s ecoEXPLORE page for the chance to win prizes from the North Carolina Arboretum. We will also encourage our ecoEXPLORERS to continue their discoveries at home!
How does ecoEXPLORE work?
After students sign up online with the permission of a parent or guardian. They can go outside in their own backyard to find native plants, reptiles, amphibians, insects and birds!
Participants can use their own device (or a parents device, with permission) and photograph their observation! They will then go to https://www.ecoexplore.net and upload their observation as well as the location, time, size, and species observed.
After uploading their observation, the staff at the North Carolina Arboretum will review the data and submit approved submissions to the iNaturalist Network, which is used by real scientists!
Win Prizes and Badges!
As students add more observations to their ecoEXPLORE page they will collect points! These points can be redeemed for awesome prizes.
ecoEXPLORE is a great program that combines science and technology with outdoor recreation. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic these hikes will be limited to 8 participants and health and safety measures will be implemented. We would love to spend some time outside together and we hope that you can join us!
