Beavers were almost eliminated from North Carolina Beavers were almost eliminated from North Carolina and the Atlantic Coast in the late nineteenth century by indiscriminate trapping. But in the 1960s, the original variety, Castor c. caroliensis, was reintroduced from Alabama into Umstead State Park. From there they moved across the state and beavers have now taken strenuous possession of the Eno River. Their chutes and burrows can be observed all along the banks. Because they have no natural enemies and are largely protected by man, they have become one of the Eno's most iconic, charming pests.

Passenger Pigeons are now extinct, but they once t Passenger Pigeons are now extinct, but they once traveled in enormous flocks over the North Carolina piedmont and eastern North America from Canada to the Gulf Coast. In 1866, a flight 1 mile wide and 300 miles long was recorded; the whole flight lasted for 14 hours! Indigenous people killed these birds regularly, but it wasn't until the nineteenth century that professional netters destroyed them massively and methodically at a rate of 700,000 a month. The last known passenger pigeon died in a zoo in 1914.

The abundance of names related to snakes suggests The abundance of names related to snakes suggests that these creatures had significant importance in early settler's daily lives, particularly the deadly rattlesnake. On the Eno trails, you can find various plants with snake-related names, such as Black Snakeroot, Seneca Snakeroot, Rattlesnake Plantain, Rattlesnake-weed, Rattlesnake-root, and Rattlesnake-fern. However, the rattlesnakes themselves are no longer present, and it's uncertain if they were ever really there.
