Join volunteer and land steward Brian for a walking stick whittling workshop along the Eno! Learn about stewardship and natural resource management while collecting saplings to create a hand-carved walking stick to take home. Bring a pocketknife, a chair, water and something to snack on while you learn the basics of wood whittling with Brian on a peaceful Saturday morning at the Confluence Natural Area in Hillsborough.

Suggested ages 12 and up. Limited to 25 participants. $15 for the general public, $9 for Eno River Association members and children under 18.

Note that this hike takes place at 9:00am rather than the usual 2:00pm in order to ensure that we have ample parking first thing in the morning.

Explore the highest hill in Orange County on the Occoneechee Mountain Loop and Chestnut Oak Trails. If the blooming cycle is right we may see Rhododendron and Mountain Laurel flowering and a plant community more typically found in the NC mountains. Our hike leader will introduce you to this special mountain habitat right here at home! Blooming of wildflowers can be unpredictable, but we will be sure to see some wonderful plants growing in this unique habitat. We will stop off for a scenic overlook of western Orange County and Hillsborough.

This hike will take approximately two hours (sometimes less, sometimes more). Please feel free to bring water and snacks. Wear comfortable, weather appropriate clothing and shoes. Well-behaved dogs are welcome as long as they are under your control and on a 6 foot leash.

This event is rain or shine. We will contact you if severe weather is expected that would cause us to cancel the hike.

Directions: Take exit #164 from I-85. Turn north toward Hillsborough on Churton Street. Turn left on Mayo Street; go past a small shopping center. Turn left on Orange Grove Road. After less than one mile, turn right on Virginia Cates Drive (gravel) just before Orange Grove passes under the interstate. The parking lot is on the left after the ponds. The address is 620 Virginia Cates Rd, Hillsborough, NC 27278.

Our annual teen Eno Climate Champions program is back with a new twist! Local teens are invited to join the Eno River Association for a FREE four-session series focusing on the role of Piedmont prairie restoration in a changing climate. During these sessions, students will learn about the history and current status of Piedmont prairies, the benefits of these ecosystems, and how they can be reintroduced in the area.

In this session, participants will apply what they’ve learned to create engaging educational materials about Piedmont prairies for display in the kiosk they installed during the previous session!

This hike has been RESCHEDULED to Saturday, May 30th at 10am.

Registration is not required for Let's Go Hike hikes, so come on out and join us at 10am for the hike. These hikes are a great opportunity to meet new hiking friends, explore the Eno, and learn a bit about this beautiful river.
