    We are recruiting swampers (log-haulers) to help our certified sawyers (chainsaw operators) as they fell trees, which will be piled to be used for wood chips or sold for firewood, with all sales benefitting UCAN in their mission to empower Durham communities with access to resources to grow their own food in a sustainable way.

    This event has been CANCELED.

    Registration is not required for Let's Go Hike hikes, so come on out and join us at 9am for this 2.4 mile hike on the new Poplar Bend Loop Trail! These hikes are a great opportunity to meet new hiking friends, explore the Eno, and learn a bit about this beautiful river.

    This hike will take approximately two hours (sometimes less, sometimes more). Please feel free to bring water and snacks. Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and shoes. Well-behaved dogs are welcome as long as they are under your control and on a 6 foot leash.

    Meet your hike leader at the Confluence Natural Area pavilion at 4214 Highland Farm Road in northern Hillsborough.

    Note that this hike takes place at 9:00am rather than the usual 2:00pm in order to ensure that we have ample parking first thing in the morning.

    Explore the highest hill in Orange County on the Occoneechee Mountain Loop and Chestnut Oak Trails. If the blooming cycle is right we may see Rhododendron and Mountain Laurel flowering and a plant community more typically found in the NC mountains. Our hike leader will introduce you to this special mountain habitat right here at home! Blooming of wildflowers can be unpredictable, but we will be sure to see some wonderful plants growing in this unique habitat. We will stop off for a scenic overlook of western Orange County and Hillsborough.

    This hike will take approximately two hours (sometimes less, sometimes more). Please feel free to bring water and snacks. Wear comfortable, weather appropriate clothing and shoes. Well-behaved dogs are welcome as long as they are under your control and on a 6 foot leash.

    T his event is rain or shine. We will contact you if severe weather is expected that would cause us to cancel the hike.

    There is no need to print your ticket - we have you on the list now!

    If your plans change and you are unable to attend the hike, please contact hillary@enoriver.org to cancel your registration so that we may offer your spot(s) to our waitlist.

    Directions: Take exit #164 from I-85. Turn north toward Hillsborough on Churton Street. Turn left on Mayo Street; go past a small shopping center. Turn left on Orange Grove Road. After less than one mile, turn right on Virginia Cates Drive (gravel) just before Orange Grove passes under the interstate. The parking lot is on the left after the ponds. The address is 620 Virginia Cates Rd, Hillsborough, NC 27278.

    Who hasn't seen a wild animal and thought, "I want to pet it," right? Join a Ranger to explore the ins and outs of our local animal residents! Most of our animal friends are pretty shy, and we don't get to see them — so here's your chance! There will be taxidermy animals, furs to touch, and skeletons to see.

    Meet at the Fews Ford Visitor Contact Station classroom at 6131 Cole Mill Road, third parking lot on the right past the entry gate. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Bring water.

    Do you like rocks and want to learn more about them? Are you curious about the geologic history beneath our feet? I hope so, because this program rocks. Join a Ranger on a two-mile hike to discover the geological history evident in our park!

    Meet at the Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area's Eno Mountain Road roadside parking area. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Wear hiking shoes and bring water.

    Bike Durham Family-Friendly Bike Trip to West Point on the Eno

    Bike Durham is hosting a family-friendly transit trip to West Point on the Eno on Saturday, May 31, focused on leisure, nature exploration, and community connection. It’s a free, beginner-friendly outing to show how public transit can connect us to local green spaces — no car, fancy gear, or experience needed.

    Trip Snapshot:

    • Meet-Up: 9:00 AM at Durham Regional Hospital (surface lot near Roxboro Rd)

    • Bus Ride: GoDurham Route 4 departs at 9:22 AM

    • Arrival & Walk: 12-minute ride + 3-minute walk to park entrance

    • Plan: Walk as a group into the park, then settle by the river for a relaxed lunch and conversation

    • Return: We’re choosing between the 12:22 or 12:52 PM bus — will confirm soon

    What to Bring: Water bottle, lunch/snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, blanket, and walking shoes.
