Education & Stewardship Summer Intern

Eno River Association | Summer 2026

Are you interested in environmental education, land conservation, working outdoors, and making a real impact in your community? The Eno River Association (ERA) is excited to offer a paid, full-time summer internship for a motivated student or early-career professional who wants hands-on experience in environmental education and land stewardship.

This internship is ideal for students or recent graduates exploring careers in environmental education, conservation, nonprofit work, outdoor recreation, or youth development—and no prior experience is required.

Position Details

  • When: Mid-May through early August 2026
  • Schedule: 40 hours per week
  • Pay: $20/hour
  • Location: Durham, NC (outdoor and office-based work)

You’ll split your time between ERA’s Education and Stewardship/Land Protection teams. During camp weeks, you’ll play a key role supporting our summer youth programs and serving as Summer Camp Coordinator.

What You’ll Do

Environmental Education & Summer Camp Support

  • Help plan and prepare activities for ERA’s summer camps, including:
    • iWalk the Eno Science & Nature Camp
    • Eno River Field Station
  • Prepare supplies, activity kits, and materials
  • Help with schedules, rosters, and day-to-day camp organization
  • Serve as Summer Camp Coordinator during all camp weeks:
    • June 22–26
    • June 29–July 3
    • July 27–31
  • Support daily camp operations like check-in/check-out and activity transitions
  • Assist camp leaders during lessons, hikes, and hands-on activities
  • Help create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for campers and families

Land Stewardship & Conservation Support

  • Support ERA’s stewardship staff on conservation projects
  • Assist with stewardship workdays and volunteer-led projects
  • Help with field work such as site visits, invasive species removal, and boundary marking
  • Support land protection efforts through document organization and database updates
  • Assist with landowner outreach and volunteer coordination

Who We’re Looking For

You don’t need to check every box—we encourage you to apply even if you’re still learning.

  • Interest in environmental education, conservation, outdoor work, or youth programs
  • Organized, dependable, and willing to learn
  • Comfortable working outdoors for up to 8 hours in summer temperatures and humidity
  • Able to walk across uneven outdoor surfaces and lift objects and tools weighing up to around 20 pounds
  • Enjoys working with kids and teens
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience with camps, youth programs, or outdoor work is a plus
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word or Excel
  • Experience with hand tools, maps, GIS, or databases is a plus
