Know Before You Go
The Eno River has many places to swim, wade, paddle, and connect with nature. Through our partnership with Sound Rivers, the Eno River Association is helping provide weekly water quality information so community members can make informed decisions about recreation on the river.
From Memorial Day through Labor Day, trained volunteers collect water samples from four locations along the Eno River. Samples are tested for E. coli bacteria, an indicator of fecal contamination in freshwater. Results are posted weekly and shared through Swim Guide’s easy-to-understand color-coded system, helping visitors understand current conditions before entering the water.
About the Program
The Eno River Association joined the Swim Guide network in 2026 through a partnership with Sound Rivers, a nonprofit organization that coordinates water quality monitoring at recreational waterways across North Carolina. Our pilot program monitors four popular swimming and recreation areas along the Eno River:
- Eno River Brewing
- Few’s Ford in Eno River State Park
- Upstream of Sennett’s Hole
- Penny’s Bend Nature Preserve
Water samples are collected weekly by trained volunteers and analyzed by Sound Rivers. Results are updated every Friday throughout the summer recreation season.
In Memory of Stella M. Schomberg
The cost of the four sampling sites has been covered through a grant given in memory of Stella M. Schomberg, a longtime supporter of the Eno River Association who always enjoyed going for a swim. Her family’s generosity helps ensure that families, paddlers, and swimmers have access to reliable water quality information throughout the summer.
