On the hunt for rare spring wildflowers with Sci NC

May 22, 2025 by Eve Salzwedel

This spring, the Eno River Association hosted a guided hike near Penny’s Bend in Durham, NC, featured on PBS North Carolina’s Sci NC. Led by ecologist Milo Pyne, the hike explored a unique section of the Eno River rich in wildflowers thanks to its rare diabase rock soil. This geology creates a more alkaline environment, allowing uncommon Piedmont plants—like Dutchman’s breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) and false rue anemone (Enemion biternatum)—to thrive.

  • The hike also took participants to Willie Duke’s Bluff, a historic preaching site nestled above the river near Penny’s Bend, and included important conversations about invasive species like fig buttercup (Ficaria verna), which threaten native biodiversity.

With spring’s fleeting bloom already underway, the Eno River Association’s expert-led outings are a perfect way to connect with nature and learn about the rare ecosystems right in our backyard.

To join future guided hikes, keep an eye on our Events on the Eno calendar at EnoRiver.org/events-on-the-eno/.
